Applicant: Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Transportation Department
Grant Award: $91,776
Summary: Grant funds were used to purchase 4 compressed natural gas operated school buses.
Status: Grant Completed. Bus dedication occurred on October 1, 1996. Prior mechanical problems have included air dryers, engine sensors, dead batteries, natural gas regulators, and poor performance problems. The buses are now in service
Applicant: City of Charlotte
Grant Award: $52,800
Summary: Funds were requested to assist in the purchase of three electric vehicles.
Status: Due to contractual problems, this project was not completed with grant funds. The award was redistributed in subsequent grant cycles.
Applicant: Forsyth County Environmental Affairs Department
Grant Award: $34,171
Summary: Funds were used for the conversion of 15 vehicles to propane.
Status: Grant Completed. All 15 vehicles have been converted. Reported problems include the check engine light staying on, pumping delays, inaccurate fuel gauge, smell of propane, backfire, and lack of power.
Applicant: Piedmont Natural Gas/Charlotte Douglas Airport
Grant Award: $179,000
Summary: Funds were used for the purchase and conversion of 3 shuttle buses to compressed natural gas.
Status: Grant Completed. A dedication ceremony was held in January 1996 for the buses at Charlotte Douglas Airport, and they are now in operation.
Applicant: UNC-Charlotte
Grant Award: $80,000
Summary: Grant funds were used to purchase a solar charged electric vehicle system.
Status: Grant Completed. The vehicle was taken to various functions to showcase electric vehicle technology, including several Earth Day celebrations in and around Charlotte.
