Hey, Otto Parts here. Let me tell you about the Inspection & Maintenance (I&M) Program for cars and trucks. The program checks to make sure the air pollution controls are working properly on your vehicle. This is important because motor vehicles contribute substantially to ozone, particle pollution and other air quality problems. Did you know that highway exhaust accounts for half of the ozone-forming emissions statewide and 70 percent or more in some urban counties?

North Carolina requires emission systems tests for cars and light-duty trucks as part of the annual safety inspection in 48 counties. Tests are required in these counties for 1996 and newer vehicles that are equipped with On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) systems. Inspectors use OBD to check whether pollution controls are working or not.

Vehicle inspection stickers on windshields are being phased out and replaced with electronic authorizations. Click here for more information.
